The RBT exam tests your theoretical knowledge and practical application under standardized conditions. Preparing effectively requires moving beyond passive reading into active recall and scenario-based practice.
Master the BACB RBT Task List
Every question on the exam is derived directly from the official BACB RBT Task List. Review each domain systematically:
- Measurement: Understand frequency, duration, latency, partial-interval, whole-interval, and momentary time sampling. Know when to use each method.
- Assessment: Familiarize yourself with how behavior analysts conduct preference assessments (e.g., paired-choice, multiple-stimulus without replacement) and how RBTs assist during functional behavior assessments.
- Skill Acquisition & Behavior Reduction: Know the difference between shaping and chaining, understand reinforcement schedules (continuous vs. intermittent), and review crisis management protocols.
Use Scenario-Based Practice Questions
RBT questions rarely ask for textbook definitions alone; they typically present a clinical scenario and ask what you should do next. Practice breaking down scenarios by identifying the antecedent, behavior, and consequence (the ABC data framework). Ask yourself: What triggered this behavior? What did the client do? How did the environment respond?
Simulate Testing Conditions
Anxiety often stems from the unknown. Practice taking timed mock exams in a quiet environment without notes or phone distractions. Building your pacing and stamina will significantly reduce test anxiety and help you maintain focus on exam day.
