Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions in the Field of Applied Behavior Analysis Continuuing Education
ABA Basics
What is ABA therapy in simple terms?
ABA therapy uses the science of learning and behavior to help a person build useful skills and address behavior
that affects safety or daily life. A qualified provider assesses the person's needs, chooses meaningful goals with
the client and family, and measures progress to guide care.
Is ABA only for children with autism?
No. ABA is used with people with different needs and diagnoses, and it also has applications outside clinical
treatment, including education and workplace performance. Whether a particular service is appropriate
depends on the person's goals, the assessment, and the provider's relevant expertise.
Is ABA only about reducing problem behavior?
No. Teaching useful skills is a major part of ABA, including asking for help, making choices, completing daily
routines, and participating in activities the client values. When a plan addresses challenging behavior, it should
also consider what the person needs and what useful skills or environmental changes could help.
How does ABA teach communication skills?
ABA can build communication by creating opportunities to request, answer, comment, and express preferences
during meaningful activities. Communication may involve speech, signs, pictures, or a communication device.
The approach should fit the client, and coordination with a speech language pathologist may be needed.
What is reinforcement in ABA?
Reinforcement happens when a consequence makes a behavior more likely to occur again under similar
conditions. For example, if asking for help leads to useful assistance and the child asks more often, that
assistance has reinforced the request. A reward only functions as reinforcement if it actually strengthens
behavior.
Is reinforcement the same thing as bribery?
Bribery is an everyday label, while reinforcement has a specific meaning: a consequence increases future behavior.
Reinforcement can happen whether or not someone planned it. In thoughtful ABA practice, providers use it to support
meaningful learning, with clear expectations and respect for the client's choices and basic needs.
Why do ABA providers collect so much data?
Data help providers see whether a client is learning, whether a concern is changing, and whether the current
approach needs adjustment. Useful data can include how often something happens, how long it lasts, or how
independently a skill is used. The information should support practical decisions and understandable progress updates.
What does it mean when people say behavior has a function?
A behavior's function describes the outcome that helps keep it happening, such as getting assistance or avoiding an
overwhelming activity. It is not necessarily a conscious choice. Providers assess patterns across situations because
the same behavior can serve different functions for different people, or even for the same person.
What is a behavior intervention plan?
A behavior intervention plan is a written guide for addressing a specific behavioral concern. It describes the behavior,
assessment findings, prevention strategies, skills to teach, responses to use, and ways to measure progress. The
plan should be understandable, practical, and developed with the client and relevant caregivers.
What does generalization mean in ABA?
Generalization means using a learned skill with different people, materials, situations, or settings beyond the original
teaching conditions. For example, a child who asks the RBT for help also asks a parent or teacher when needed.
Providers often plan practice across situations because generalization does not always happen automatically.
RBT Training and Practice
What is an RBT?
An RBT is a Registered Behavior Technician, a BACB credential for a professional who helps deliver behavior
analytic services. RBTs work under close, ongoing supervision and do not practice independently.
Is an RBT allowed to create behavior plans?
RBTs do not independently design behavior intervention plans. They contribute observations and data while
the supervising behavior analyst makes clinical decisions about the plan.
What does an RBT do during a session?
A session may include practicing communication, daily living, social, or other skills identified in the client's plan.
The RBT follows the assigned procedures, records the client's responses, and shares relevant information with
the supervisor.
How do I become an RBT?
Meet the BACB's age and education requirements and pass both a criminal background check and an abuse registry
check. Complete a qualifying 40 hour training and the Initial Competency Assessment, submit your application, and
pass the RBT examination after approval. Ongoing supervision is required to provide services as an RBT.
What is the 40 hour RBT training?
The 40 hour RBT training is an initial certification requirement covering the BACB's current curriculum for behavior
technicians. It includes foundational knowledge, practical responsibilities, ethics, and preparation for supervised
service delivery.
Does Behavior Connect offer RBT training?
Yes. Behavior Connect offers an initial 40 hour RBT training module, as well as professional development courses for
people who are already RBTs. Choose initial training if you are working toward certification and designated PDU
courses if you need professional development credit.
What happens after I finish the 40 hour RBT training?
After training, complete the Initial Competency Assessment with a qualified assessor and gather the remaining
application documents. You then apply to the BACB and, once approved, schedule and pass the RBT examination.
Am I certified after I complete the RBT training?
No. A training certificate confirms completion of training, while RBT certification requires the BACB application
process and a passing examination result. The Initial Competency Assessment and other eligibility requirements must
also be completed.
What is the RBT competency assessment?
The Initial Competency Assessment checks whether you can perform the required entry level RBT tasks. It is
completed after the 40 hour training and within 90 days before submitting your certification application, using the
methods specified in the BACB assessment packet.
Who can complete my RBT competency assessment?
A qualified BCBA or BCaBA who completed the 8 hour supervision training must oversee and sign the assessment.
Responsible and assistant assessors may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by the applicant. The
applicant and assessors must also meet the BACB's organizational employment or contractual relationship
requirements for the client involved. Qualified assistant assessors may help under the responsible assessor's
oversight.
RBT Professional Development
What are RBT PDUs?
PDUs are units of professional development used to document qualifying learning for RBT recertification. For ACE
professional development events, 1 PDU equals 50 instructional minutes and 0.5 PDU equals 25 instructional
minutes.
Do RBTs need 12 PDUs every 2 years?
Yes, once the RBT has entered the new two year recertification cycle. The requirement is 12 PDUs across that cycle,
with no separate requirement to complete exactly 6 each year.
Do RBTs need PDUs if they were certified before 2026?
Yes. RBTs certified before 2026 move into the new PDU system after completing their 2026 recertification. They must
earn the required PDUs during the resulting two year cycle, rather than counting courses completed before that cycle
began.
Do RBTs need PDUs after they certify or recertify in 2026?
Yes. Once their new cycle begins, they must earn 12 PDUs before the next recertification deadline. For RBTs who
certify or recertify in 2026, the first regular recertification using PDUs is in 2028.
Can RBTs earn PDUs through in service training?
Yes, if the training is provided through the RBT's employing organization and meets the BACB's content, instructor,
participation, and documentation requirements. Ordinary staff meetings, company policies, and training on a specific
client's program do not automatically qualify.
Can RBTs earn PDUs through ACE events?
Yes. RBTs can earn PDUs from qualifying professional development events offered by BACB Authorized Continuing
Education Providers. The event must be intended for RBT PDUs, rather than analyst CEUs.
Can Behavior Connect courses count toward RBT PDUs?
Yes. Behavior Connect is a BACB Authorized Continuing Education Organization Provider, and its courses specifically
designated for RBT PDUs can count when you complete the requirements within your eligible recertification cycle.
Check the course description for the number of PDUs offered.
How do RBTs document PDUs?
Keep the completed BACB form supplied for each qualifying ACE or employer training event, or the syllabus and
transcript for eligible university coursework. Enter the activity and upload the required documentation in your BACB
account, matching the information on your records.
Do RBTs upload PDU certificates to their BACB account?
Yes. For an ACE event, upload the completed BACB RBT Professional Development: ACE Event form, which is the
required PDU documentation. A branded course certificate alone does not replace that form.
What happens if an RBT does not complete PDUs on time?
Missing the PDU requirement can prevent recertification, and missing the recertification deadline means the RBT
must stop practicing, billing, or presenting themselves as an active RBT. The reinstatement period does not allow
missed PDUs to be earned after the deadline. Contact the BACB promptly for the requirements that apply to your
status.
BCBA and BCaBA Continuing Education
What is a BCaBA?
A Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst, or BCaBA, is a professional with an undergraduate level certification in
behavior analysis. BCaBAs provide services under qualified supervision and may supervise RBTs when they meet the
BACB's supervisor requirements.that affects safety or daily life. A qualified provider assesses the person's needs, chooses meaningful goals with
the client and family, and measures progress to guide care.
How many ethics CEUs does a BCaBA need?
BCaBAs need at least 4 ethics CEUs during each two year recertification cycle. Those credits count toward the 20
CEU total, and the ethics minimum remains 4 under the published 2027 requirements.
What is a BCBA?
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst, or BCBA, is a professional with a graduate level certification in behavior analysis.
BCBAs may practice independently and supervise others when they meet the requirements for those roles.
How many supervision CEUs does a BCBA need if supervising?
The current BCBA minimum is 3 supervision CEUs per two year recertification cycle when supervision CEUs apply.
For recertification on or after January 1, 2027, that minimum increases to 4. These credits count toward the 32 CEU
total.
How do I know if a CEU course is acceptable for BCBA recertification?
For an online provider course, confirm the provider's active ACE status and check the course's audience, content,
CEU amount, and category. The course should offer current material in behavior analysis beyond an introductory level
and provide completion documentation. You must complete the requirements within your recertification cycle, and
repeated courses do not earn new credit.
What counts as an ethics CEU for BCBAs?
An ethics CEU comes from an eligible event focused mainly on the BACB's ethics requirements or cultural and
contextual responsiveness. The content must connect directly to behavior analysis practice or applied research. A
brief mention of ethics in an otherwise unrelated course is not enough.
Do I need supervision CEUs if I supervise RBTs?
Yes, if you supervised RBTs on record at any point during your recertification cycle. The current minimum is 3
supervision CEUs for BCBAs and BCaBAs. For BCBA recertification on or after January 1, 2027, the minimum
increases to 4; the BCaBA minimum remains 3.
Do I need supervision CEUs if I supervise fieldwork students?
Yes, if you supervise fieldwork for people pursuing BCBA or BCaBA certification at any point during your
recertification cycle. BCBAs currently need 3 supervision CEUs, increasing to 4 for recertification on or after January
1, 2027. This is an ongoing CE requirement in addition to completing the initial 8 hour supervision training before
providing supervision.
How many CEUs do BCaBAs need?
BCaBAs need 20 CEUs during each two year recertification cycle, including at least 4 in ethics. BCaBAs who
supervised RBTs on record during that cycle also need 3 supervision CEUs within the same 20 CEUs. These CEU
totals remain unchanged under the published 2027 requirements.
How many CEUs do BCBAs need?
BCBAs need 32 CEUs during each two year recertification cycle, including at least 4 in ethics. When supervision
CEUs apply, the minimum is 3 for recertification before January 1, 2027, and 4 for recertification on or after that date.
These category credits are included in the 32 CEU total.

available in your account, contact support@BehaviorConnect.org with your order details so access can be reviewed.
Who do I contact for support?
Email support@BehaviorConnect.org for help with accounts, purchases, course access, or completion documents.
Include your account email, the course title, and a brief description of the issue. If an error message appears, include
its wording, but never send your password.
Agency and School Training
Can Behavior Connect train all RBTs at my agency?
Behavior Connect can support professional development for multiple RBTs through courses purchased by an agency.
Each RBT uses an individual account, completes the required learning activities, and receives individual
documentation. Courses supplement your agency's training and do not replace supervision or training on each client's
treatment plan.
Can Behavior Connect help agencies standardize training?
Yes. Assigning a shared set of relevant courses can give staff a consistent foundation in topics such as ethics, data
collection, and professional responsibilities. Supervisors can then check how staff apply the material. Course
completion alone does not establish competence with every client or procedure.
Can schools use Behavior Connect for staff training?
Yes. Behavior Connect offers online courses for school staff, along with consultation and on site training where
feasible. Schools can choose topics related to behavior, communication, data collection, and professional roles. The
school or district determines whether the training meets its professional development requirements.
Can Behavior Connect help school staff understand ABA?
Relevant courses explain concepts such as reinforcement, communication, data collection, and the roles of ABA
professionals. Schools can use those topics to guide discussions about supporting students and working with
providers. Staff should apply training within their qualifications and the procedures authorized for their setting.
Can Behavior Connect explain the difference between ABA support and classroom instruction?
ABA support focuses on assessed behavior and skill goals, while classroom instruction follows educational objectives
and the teacher's responsibilities. The work should be coordinated around the student's needs. Courses addressing
professional roles can help staff understand these responsibilities.
Can Behavior Connect help school staff understand the RBT role?
Courses covering the RBT role can explain how RBTs carry out plans, collect data, and communicate with a qualified
supervisor. RBTs do not independently design treatment or replace the classroom teacher. Schools should also clarify
each provider's responsibilities in the student's setting.
Can Behavior Connect help schools understand BCBA consultation?
BCBA consultation can include reviewing behavioral concerns, evaluating data, recommending supports, and helping
staff implement agreed procedures. Its scope depends on the consultation arrangement and the analyst's
competence. Review the available course topics or contact Behavior Connect about the training your school needs.
Can Behavior Connect support professional development days?
Yes. Schools can incorporate Behavior Connect courses into professional development days and discuss on site
training where feasible. Each participant who needs a certificate or credit must complete the course's individual
participation requirements. Watching a course as a group does not automatically earn individual CEUs or PDUs.
Can school staff get certificates for completed courses?
Course participants receive downloadable completion certificates and training records after meeting the course
requirements. BACB credit depends on the participant's credential and the course's designated credit type. A school
or educator licensing authority separately decides whether it recognizes the training.
Can Behavior Connect create custom training for a school?
Yes. Behavior Connect offers school consultation and can arrange on site training where feasible, alongside its online
courses for school staff. Contact us with the audience, learning goals, location, preferred format, and timing. Scope,
availability, pricing, and any applicable credit are agreed based on the request.
